Community Development in the eastern Congo

We are currently working on the business plan (which is still in a draft form) that we intend to use to solicit for funds from individuals, donor organization well-wishers etc. Our main area of concern here is the training of teachers, buying an additional plot of land, salary for teaching and support staff and administrative cost, as our partner organization in Canada (Reach Architecture Studio from Canada) takes on the task of designing and building of the school. In addition to the items on the business plan, the community felt that Issues such as Environment and HIV/AISD be included in the business plan as they are in nowadays not only considered to be crosscutting in development activities, but also have become a social upheaval that to a greater extent affects almost every part of the world more especially those in developing countries (rural communities) like Nyalebbe, this is due to their negative effect on community livelihood, human development and sustainable development among others.

Continued Progress in Nyalebbe - and some music!

When we first acquired a donation from the students of Europe in 2008 we set up a Vocational Training Centre in which young women and men are developing their skills in Carpentry and Tailoring. We procured a number of Sewing machines in addition to the Agwara Machine which was an earlier donation from a friend in Australia; we also bought materials for start up and equipments and tools for carpentry.

From that time till now, as a small school; we have been able to graduate over 30 students who have been able to employ the skills and knowledge acquired to earn a living in a justified manner; as the primary objective of the school. At the moment we have 7 students taking a course in carpentry and 10 taking in tailoring.

We however still experience a number of challenges, for instance the tutors only obtained informal training and they are volunteers, we have been using a dilapidated building (of early 60s) which we acquire using part of the funding received from Europe, this needs to be salvaged and torn down for better one.

The project being undertaken by Crystal and her thesis partners is an opportunity that we need to uphold in order to build on the existing structures of the community for a sustainable community initiative. We need you to join hands with us in fund raising for a piece of land and training of teachers.

Music as basis for friendship!

In the Agwara dance at the end of the right column of this blog, the subject was the hardship the community was undergoing at that time. Actually the song was composed during famine.

The Adungu is a traditional musical instrument of ours, of the Alur people. You can read more about it here.

Action: a Canadian visitor, new energy and direction!

Crystal Waddell, a masters student of architecture at the University of Toronto in Canada, visited Nyalebbe in July-August 2010 as part of her thesis project to design and help build a Vocational Training Center for the community.

Here is a photo of Crystal sitting with Mama Mado while Mama Mado welcomes her to Nyalebbe.

Everyone was pleased to meet Crystal. We really appreciate what she is trying to do to help us get the school started.

In this photo, Crystal is meeting children, in the company of Adubango and Deo. Adubangio Upio is Secretary of CDA. He has a diploma in literature and philosophy and teaches in the Kasengu Secondary School. Deo is an agricultural field extension worker for Anghal Collectivité. Deo is our mobilizer. He is a very hard working young man in his late 30s. To him the vocational training centre will engage the community in practical skills. When we were started the CDA he commented "Most people think that help will come from above but this not true. We must work for ourselves. We are so blessed that such an organisation has been set up in our community, we have waited for this opportunity for so long so, it is our turn to demonstrate to the world that that we can also do something."

During the two week visit, Crystal interacted with the community and surveyed the area while collecting and mapping data and local resources like water sources, vegetation, circulation, surrounding villages, soil type, and topography of the area. All this information is crucial to the understanding of the region and the design of the school.

On her way to Nyalebbe (DRC) Crystal spent over a week in Nebbi, Uganda (just across the border) where she observed the various types of resources such as local water projects in Erussi and Nebbi, building suppliers that will be providing materials for the school in Nyalebbe , and other vocational training centres such as Ora Technical Institute, Goli Women Vocational Training Centre, and Arua Technical Institute – Ragem. We aim to train teachers for the proposed school from Uganda and possibly in one of the schools visited.

While in the DRC, Crystal also visited neighbouring places including Mahagi, Ambaki (for a visit with the chief of Anghal), Banda and Bunia. Bunia, approximately 200km from Nyalebbe is the capital city of Ituri District which is to become a Province.

Crystal and her two thesis partners Robin Proctor and Lisa Sato intend to have the first phase of the project built by 2013, this is to include programs such as carpentry, tailoring, masonry, and computer science.

For this project to be successful, we need to have our teachers properly trained as well as we need to acquire a larger plot of land for the construction. The current teachers are volunteers and up to now have only obtained informal training, which is not good enough if we are to aim for higher quality education for the students. As well the piece of land owned is quite small and needs to be expanded upon.

The building of the vocational training centre will bring many skills and resources to our community, which is vital for both young and old to thrive.

Back in Canada a major next step for Crystal will be construction of a database of all materials, skills, and people needed to build the school and begin its work. This will take time and will give all involved a clear sense of the complexity and serious tasks involved.

Another round of project challenge

We have once again been considered for fundraising on global giving UK in the April 2010 challenge. The competition is already on; it started on 1st and will run up to 30th April 2010. We have applied for project challenge on Global Giving UG… this project will run for a period of one month. CDA gets a donation from USA

A friend in the US has donated the sum of USD 50 (thorough Western Union) to the projects of Community Development Alliance, the Executive Committee of the organization will determine in which area to invest the money which is a total of UGX 94,678 (local currency).

CDA re unite a family through the easterncongo.net

Through our website www.easterncongo.net we were able to reunite a family that has not been in touch for over 30years. Mukoi Abraham is an Alur by tribe and a member the Royal family from the Alur Hhiefdom of Anghal Colectivité in the Territory of Mahagi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. He left home in 1979 while a young man, lived in Burundi for some time before proceeding to USA (Texas) where he lives now. He was so exited when he came across easterncongo.net and new he had got near home, he made contact with me and I was able to reach his family, they are now in touch after all those years, we so happy for him and his family.

CDA Received Funds from Australian Women.

CDA has received the sum of Ugandan Shillings 750,000 from the women of Australia to implement two women projects in baking and knitting. This was a fundraising done during the 2009 International Women’s day celebration in Australia. The projects are now underway we expect more on the progress of the projects right here in our news blog (in the picture above the treasuere for the women group receiving the funds from Vince)

Mean while in the training department we have started a new round of training with 5 students in carpentry and 10 students in tailoring. The training will run for a period of 9 months, that is up to December 2009 and another program will begin in February 2010.

The Goat Bank Project is back on global giving.

As you will recall we participated in the global giving project late last year and raised up to $ 764 which was not enough to meet the target of 5,274 as planned and the necessary threshold of $ 3000 to remain on the website. This time we have been invited to participate in the globalgiving.co.uk project challenge, the link to our project is http://www.globalgiving.co.uk/pr/2700/proj2631a.html this challenge will run from 30th March 2009 to 30th April 2009. During this period we are expected to raise the sum of £1000 to meet the thresh hold to remain on the website.

CDA GETS A BANK ACCOUNT

Community Development Alliance has finally acquired its own bank account. The account with the name Community Development Alliance was opened on 09th January 2009 at Stanbic Bank Uganda Ltd – Nebbi Branch. This will now “strengthen and facilitate financial management, transparency and accountability of the organization” as stated by Mama Mado (the Chairperson EC) during the meeting in which the executive committee resolved to open a bank account. The account was opened in Uganda because in this part of Congo (Eastern Region) there are no bank services so people have to cross over to the neighboring countries in order to access such services.

The funds from the account will be withdrawn by the three members of the organizations who are the signatories, e.g. Coordinator, Chairperson and the General Secretary. The treasurer who was supposed to be one of the signatories instead of General Secretary could not make it due her disability stratus which can not allow her travel long distance on a motorcycle which is the only available means of transport.

Mean while the students who were meant to conclude their training in December have finally completed but there was no official graduation ceremony, we intent to organize it at a later date, when funds will allow. Other students will be recruited during this month of January and February then begins training in March.

Global Giving Project Challenge Completed

We are glad to enlighten you that we were able to successfully complete the just concluded global giving project challenge that began on 1^st to 21^st November 2008 and we were able to raise the sum of $ 764. WE HAVE GONE OVER HALFWAY THE COMPETITION

13 days down the road at global giving with just a few days left for the completion so we have managed to raise US D 314 to date (from 5 donors) and left with 4,960 to make the 5,274 needed for the goat bank (http://www.easterncongo.net/081023goatbank.html). The money so far raised may not even qualify us to win space at global giving, as we need a minimum of US D 3,000 to stay on the web for further fund raising. EFFECT OF GOMA CLASHES ON THE PEOPLE OF NYALEBBE/MAHAGI

The current clashes between the rebels of Gen Laurent Nkunda and Congolese forces in Goma is likely not to have any direct effects on Nyalebbe and Mahagi Territory at large. This is because of the distance of Goma from Mahagi which is estimated to be over 480km, far south to the border of Rwanda (as shown in the picture, click to enlarge), Goma is in South Kivu province while Mahagi is found in Province Oriental. History also shows that conflict which originates from the far south does not spread up to Mahagi as was the case with the war which over threw Mobutu’s government in 1997 led by the late president Laurent Kabila (Kabila senior). If the war is to affect the people of Mahagi at all, it will be in its later stages when the rebels have captured the entire pig towns of eastern Congo like Butembo, Kisangani, Bunia, Beni etc and still they would just deploy in Mahagi but not fight.

The war that affected Mahgi Territory between year 1998 and 2006, originated from the ethnic conflicts of the Lendu and Hema communities who occupy the Territories of Djugu and Irumu, these ethnic strive later on developed into political conflicts with many rebel groups formed like the UPC led by Thomas Lubanga, PUSIC led by Kahwa, FRPI led Ndjabu and FNI led by Cobra Matata then later on by Peter Kerim.

The possible threat to the people of Mahagi is the LRA rebels of Josepth Kony fighting the government Uganda, who are currently based in Garamba Park and causing a lot of atrocities to the people Dungu Territory but it is also not yet clear if they can reach up to Mahagi.

We are yet safe at the moment.

The first two priority projects have gone into the third quarter.

Following the beginning of the training programs in April this year, we have now completed the second quarter and we have entered the third quarter due to end in December 08 with 18 students training in tailoring and 4 students in carpentry. The course which had been programmed to complete is six month (from April to September) has been extended for more three month that is up to December. This was after a comprehensive assessment by the tutors and realizing that the six month was not enough to impart all the required knowledge and skills. The report for the second quarter which includes all the activities carried out and the financial report is can be obtained from our workshop discussion room at Nabuur.com.

TRAINING TO COMPLETE IN DECEMBER

The first phase training in carpentry and tailoring is programmed to be completed in December 2008. We had first programmed for the training to take six month, that is from April to September, but after a comprehensive assessment by the tutors, they found out that, for the students not to be half baked; the training need to go for nine months (from April to December). That is when all the students of Tailoring and carpentry will graduate. Watch out for the financial and narrative report for the second quarter here very soon

PROJECT WITH GLOBAL GIVING.

We have submitted in a proposal with global giving after completing the due diligence, in this proposal we wish to fund raid for our next priority project “A Goat Bank”, the idea is of a bank not lending money but lending goats... a person receives a female goat and when there is offspring passes on the first female goat to the bank community to be lent to another group member. The goats will be cross-bred from local does and imported Boer goat bucks, to provide improvement in livestock health and meat and milk production. This has been after making a good beginning with our two community projects in which we set up our own training schemes (carpentry and tailoring) to provide skills and potential for work and income for young people; as we also gain experience in receiving and managing financial support in a transparent and accountable way.

The goat bank project will help in restocking the animals that we lost during the civil strife and political instability, as well ensuring constant supply of milk and meat as a means of food security, and to reduce the problem of malnutrition especially among the children and pregnant and breast feeding mothers. This project will also help in conflict resolution and reconciliation in a community churned up by war, violence and deaths. To make the Goat Bank we must be train and organise. Organising people in work groups will bring them closer, enable work to common purpose

POSITIVE TRAINING PROGRESS

Following the procurement of Tailoring and Carpentry tools and equipments, there has been a positive enrolment and training progress in the two programs. For the tailoring program we have 17 students currently attending training, this consist of 6 women and 11 men while for the Carpentry we have 3 students who registered.

To cop up with the number of students enrolled in the tailoring program, there are two training section that is, morning classes housing 9 students and evening classes housing 8 students. This has made it easy for the tutor to handle all of them at the same time while they share the six machines. The Carpentry training will begin on Monday 26^th May 2008 as the registration ends on Friday 23^rd 2008; there is hope that at least 10 students will the enrolled for the program. By next month we are optimistic that we shall begin selling our products from both tailoring and carpentry programs.

In the picture is Ayera Munguryek who is one of the female students enrolled for tailoring program in the evening section. We have realized a low enrolment rate by female; this however calls for a wide-ranging sensitization campaign so as to encourage the female to enroll in big number alongside the male.

CDA HAS FINALLY RECEIVED TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS

The management of CDA and the Community of Nyalebbe has finally received the equipments and tools bought with the funds received from Europe and Australia; we received 5 sewing machines and other equipments for tailoring and the tools for Carpentry. While the training in tailoring started last year (2007) during the month of December with the first donation received from a volunteer in Australia of one sewing machine, the carpentry had not yet started and we hope to begin in two weeks time as registration is already going on. The community and the members of the organization were very happy to receive the items saying “it is the first of a king in the community yet most did not believe in the project when it has just started”, they pledged for solidarity and support for the project and any other project that the organization will under take. We believe that with the tools received the number of students will also increase

CDA HOLDS A ONE DAY STAKEHODERS SENIMAR

Since the official opening of Community Development Alliance (CDA) as a local NGO in October 2007 after obtaining the legal status from the government of the DRC, there had never been any meeting/gathering for all the stakeholder where the leaders of the organization would get the chance of explaining exactly what the organization aims to do and achieve. With the funds received from

Dr. Aletta Jacobs College (Euros 4800)

, we were able to organize a one day seminar for all the stakeholders (CBOs, Local NGOs,
Local/community leaders, Political Leaders, Government leaders and the members of the organization etc) that took place on 12^th April 2008 in the parish hole of Nyalebbe Mission. We were also able to officially launch the first two projects (Carpentry and Tailoring) that we intend to begin with, with the funds received

Opening remark was made by Mama Mado Beriu who is the Chairperson of the organization, followed by group discussions and brain storming on how a local organization can achieve or fail to achieve its goals and objectives and how it can become self reliance; and then in the afternoon speeches were made by the representative of women and the representative of the Chef de Collectivité who also officially launched the organization and the projects.

FUNDS FROM EUROPE RECEIVED

CDA has now received the funds from the students of Dr. Aletta Jacobs College (Euros 4800). This has made the executive committee and other members very busy planning for the first phase implementation of Carpentry and Tailoring projects, the projects will kick start in April with a stakeholders seminar on 05/04/08. The seminar will be attended by all the Chef de Groupement of Anghal Collectivité, all the Chef de Localité of Sabu Groupement, all the NGOs and CBOs in Anghal Collectivité, the coordinator COOPI Mahagi Mr. Muzi Nathanael, all the members of CDA and Chef de Collectivité of Anghal Rowth Yamu Jalango Gedeon.

NYALEBBE TO RECEIVE FUNDS FROM STUDENTS IN EUROPE

CDA now plans to take off with the first phase implementation of the training in Tailoring and Garments Cutting and Carpentry and Joinery. This has been possible with the funds from the students of Dr. Aletta Jacobs College in the Netherlands who held a sponsor run for Nyalebbe and came up with an incredible final amount of Euro 4800.

We wish to extend our sincere thanks to all the students, the administration of the college, Nabuur, our volunteers/neighbors and all those who have selflessly contributed and will still contribute towards our projects.

10 STUDENTS ENROLLED FOR TAILORING COURSE

Following the purchase of one sewing machine with the donation that we receive in the mid last month, there has been a very good turn up of the community to enrolment for the tailoring course; we have 4 young men and 6 women and girls. This has been a very good start up within a month; we believe that in three months to come we shall have a good number hence need for more sewing machine.

In a related development, we have received another donation of $AUST340; the donation is a contribution from a few individual from Australia who came together with the help of one of our volunteers (neighbors) to fundraise for our startup. This money will be used to purchase one sewing machine and its accessories and a basic start for very small project of “table cloth making” for the women, the decision of how the money should be used was reached by the executive committee in their last meeting held on 22/12/07.

CDA JOINS FORDECA

Community Development Alliance has joined a network for Non Governmental Organizations in Aghal Collectivité - FORDECA. We also intend to join other net works like Society Civic which is the forum for all civil society organizations in Mahagi Territory, SOCIMAG which is another net work for Non Governmental Organizations and CADEMA which is a network for all the cultural organization in Mahagi Territory.

ADC RECEIVES AGWARA MACHINE

Community Development Alliance has acquired a new sewing machine which was a donation from one of our volunteers Mr. Dennis Argall for a basic start up. He (Dennis) named it Agwara Machine after the famous Agwara dance of the Alur people. The news was so exiting to not only the executive committee members of the organization but to the whole community of Nyalebe. The receipt of the donation (machine) also motivated the community who pledged to contribute money to pay for four month rent for the room where the machine will be used and stored and to buy other things like a pair of scissors, materials, and thread so that the training can begin straight away with some few students. This means the organization now has an office which is running, the office is located at the entrance of Nyalebe trading Centre about 500 meters from the heart centre.

The Chef de Grouppement of Nyalebe (Chef Uchim Jalubinyo - in the Picture) has appreciated the initiative of Community Development Alliance and pledged for a full support. He said the establishment of a Community Vocational Training Centre and engagement in other community development activities is something that the people of Nyalebe really need at this time to shed lights on them after several years of darkness. He further thanked the leaders for having started by registering at Territoir (Territory), he also urged the organization to not only look at Nyalebe as Grouppement but Anghal Collectivité and Mahagi as a whole.

Nyalebe community has received a donation of a digital camera from a sponsor who asked to remain in anonymity. This will now facilitate in taking photos of the activities taking place in the community, it will also save us from the cost of hiring a camera whenever we need one. Our sincere thanks go to all that contributed.

Riding on a rough road from Nebbi to Nyalebe has never been a problem, a distance of 56km which I normally cover in two and half hours due to the condition of the road. I'm always in constant touch with the community for consultation and coordination of other activities. I use a hired motorcycle to travel at the cost of Uganda x 20,000 (approximate of US D 11.42) per day, the ride is so interesting, you really need to try it out .
